Union County Prosecutor Agency will no longer investigate Elizabeth homicides

Union County Homicide Task Force investigate two brothers arrested in Plainfield homicide. Two brothers from Plainfield were arrested and charged yesterday with the May 10, 2012 shooting death of a city man, announced Union County First Assistant Prosecutor Albert Cernadas, Jr. The arrests followed an intense investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force.

ELIZABETH, N.J -  “The Union County Prosecutor’s Office will no longer investigate homicides or suspicious deaths in Elizabeth the city with the most killings in the county, said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow.

The decision, effective immediately, comes after Romankow’s repeated requests that Elizabeth detectives be placed on the Homicide Task Force were denied. The task force investigates homicides in all county municipalities and the Elizabeth investigations were draining office resources, Romankow said.

Former Treasurer of the Fanwood/Scotch Plains Recycling Association Sentenced

UNION COUNTY, N.J-  The former treasurer of the Fanwood/Scotch Plains Recycling Association was sentenced to five years probation today for stealing $15,000 from the Association’s funds over a four-year period. Joan Ayala, 58, who served as the Association’s treasurer on a volu nteer basis for more than 15 years, was also ordered to make restitution of $34,000 as a condition of probation. That figure included the $15,000 she stole plus $19,000 the Association had to remit to the New Jersey Department of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service for unpaid payroll taxes and to hire an accountant to review her records.

ELIZABETH, NJ – The Union County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee invites the public to hear a special lecture by Dr. Linda Caldwell Epps about the Underground Railroad and view new displays in the Civil War Exhibition at the Union County Courthouse in Elizabeth on Thursday, October 11, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

“Union County is honored to have Dr. Linda Caldwell Epps speak here about the Underground Railroad in the period leading up to the Civil War as we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1861-65 conflict,” said Union County Clerk Joanne Rajoppi, chairman of the committee.
